About Us

Shaping the Territory
Since 1985

Background

Platt Architects was formed in Alice Springs in 1985 and is a Northern Territory owned and operated Architectural Practice. The Principal, Les Platt, has spent 38 years practicing within the Northern Territory.

During this period Platt Architects have accumulated extensive experience in a broad range of medium to large scale projects across the Northern Territory for both the private and public sectors including all stages of project delivery — project management, brief development, master planning, design, documentation and contract administration.

The largest project undertaken to-date is the design and documentation of the Alice Springs Correctional Centre ($40 million at the time of construction).

Platt Architects support local consultants and building contractors where possible. If the need arises, we will work in association with other Territory and interstate architectural practices, particularly if there is a need to supplement specific knowledge and/or skills into a project.

Sustainable Design

We understand the principles of energy sustainable design for the broad range of climates throughout the NT. Some of the passive Environmentally Sustainable Design solutions we implement include:

  • Orientation of buildings to breezes (Top End)
  • Orientation to maximise sun shading of walls
  • Selection of appropriate building materials and construction systems
  • Detailing of insulation and vapour barriers
  • Sealing of gaps, windows, doors openings
  • Use of BMS to manage temperature & heat loads

Les Platt was Project Architect on Arnhemica House, Parap — a two storey office building which achieved a five star NABERS rating, the first in the Northern Territory.
